Tooth Extraction

If we believe a tooth to be damaged or decayed beyond repair, we may well recommend tooth extraction.

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

We will only ever recommend tooth extraction if we believe it to be absolutely necessary, but there are a variety of factors that can lead to needing a tooth extraction.

For example, your tooth might be damaged beyond repair as a result of injury or be so decayed that a filling can’t fix it. Other reasons include making room in an overcrowded mouth, impacted wisdom teeth and, in some cases, baby teeth that haven’t fallen out before permanent teeth come through.

What is getting a tooth extraction like?

We will administer a local anaesthetic so that you remain awake but don’t feel any pain while the treatment is happening.

Once the anaesthetic has come into effect, we will widen the socket of the tooth, gently loosen it and then fully remove it. You may then need a few stitches to help the socket heal properly.

How do I take care of the area after getting a tooth extracted?

We will talk through all aftercare instructions with you but it’s important to keep the area clean. As you will have had local anaesthetic, you should avoid hot food and drink until sensation returns.

When sensation does return, it is very likely that you will experience some pain and discomfort. If this is the case, we recommend taking over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
