At Hatfield Dental Care, we are pleased to be able to offer treatment for hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. While sweating is natural, some patients who sweat more than most can find it uncomfortable, embarrassing and difficult to cope with.
While hyperhidrosis is often genetic, it can also be a symptom of other medical conditions. This is why we always advise seeking the opinion from a GP in the first instance, as there may be an underlying cause that can be treated in an alternative way.
How do we treat hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is challenging to treat and requires the skill of an experienced practitioner. Once a patient has spoken to their GP to rule out any other underlying causes, we will discuss the treatment to ensure it suits each individual’s needs and expectations.
It is important to understand that treatment is not permanent, and the symptoms will gradually return.
Patients will require two appointments, the first will be an initial consultation to carry out an examination, take a full medical history, and assess current health. We will also discuss the patient’s own concerns and explain the treatment options available. If all is well and patient and practitioner are happy to go ahead, we will carry out the treatment at a second appointment.
We will first apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area. Once this has taken effect, we will fully cleanse the treatment area before carrying out a series of botulinum toxin injections. The toxin will block the chemical that stimulates the sweat glands and will prevent sweating in the treated area.
While the area may feel a little sore, patients can immediately resume their regular activities.
