The effects of dermal fillers are fully apparent immediately post-treatment and while the results are not permanent, they are long-lasting and are even reversible. Most patients return for a top-up every 6-12 months.

What areas can be treated?

While the most well-known areas for dermal filler treatment are the lips and cheeks for enhancement, there are plenty of other areas that can benefit from this treatment, including:

  • Lips
    • Mouth corners
    • Nose to mouth lines
    • Smokers lines
    • Jawline
    • Cheeks
    • Chin
    • Tear troughs
    • Nose

How do dermal filler injections work?
Dermal filler injections are made from a substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which naturally occurs within the body. HA is a water-loving molecule, often described as ‘nature’s moisturiser’, transporting vital hydration around the body. As we age, our ability to produce HA decreases, especially in the skin, which is why we tend to lose that plumpness and dewiness so often associated with youth.

Dermal fillers use this naturally-occurring substance to create volume in the desired areas of the face. There are different products for specific techniques, some have a slightly thicker consistency and we use those for contouring the nose, cheeks, chin, and jawline to create a defined look. Other, softer products are used under the eyes, and on the forehead to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and in the lips for a plumper pout.

The treatment takes between 20-30 minutes. We will first apply a topical anaesthetic to numb the area, once this has taken effect we will then remove any make up and fully cleanse the area to be treated. At Hatfield Dental, we adopt a highly advanced technique that uses a cannula to place the product, which helps to keep bruising and swelling to a minimum.

Most patients say that treatment is not painful, although some experience mild discomfort. The lips are particularly sensitive thanks to the high density of nerves in this area, because of this we offer dental blocks – two injections in the upper lip and two in the lower lip – which are quick and make the treatment pain free.

The results of dermal fillers are immediate and can last up to 12-18 months depending on each patient. However, to maintain the results many patients opt to have top-ups every 6-12 months.

We recommend avoiding alcohol immediately after your treatment, especially if you experience swelling. We also advise avoiding exercise, excessive sun exposure, and the use of make-up following treatment. Try not to rub or touch the treatment areas, too. Your practitioner will provide detailed aftercare relating to your specific treatment areas.

Patients who have any concerns about possible complications after their treatment are advised to contact us or their GP straight away.

What are the side effects?
One of the many advantages of dermal filler treatment is that side effects are very minimal and temporary. Most patients can expect to experience some slight bruising and swelling, which should settle down after a couple of days.

As with any treatment, sometimes rare complications can occur with dermal fillers but all risks and contraindications will be explained during your face to face consultation.
